Summary

Between training the new town garda and trying to set a wedding date with her fiancé, Macdara Flannery, Siobhán O’Sullivan is feeling a bit overwhelmed。 She’s looking forward to visiting the new bookshop and curling up with an exciting novel—only to discover the shelves contain nothing but Literature with a capital L。 The owner not only refuses to stock romances, mysteries, and science fiction, but won’t even let customers enter his store unless they can quote James Joyce or Sean Hennessey。

Despite the owner deliberately limiting his clientele, he’s hosting a reading and autographing event featuring up and coming Irish writers who will be taking up residency in Kilbane for a month。 Among them is indie author Deirdre Walsh, who spends more time complaining about the unfairness of the publishing industry and megastar bestsellers instead of her own creative works, causing a heated debate among the writers。 She seems to have a particular distaste for the novels of Nessa Lamb。

Then Deirdre’s body is found the next day in the back of the store—with pages torn from Nessa’s books stuffed in her mouth。 Now, Siobhán must uncover which of Kilbane’s literary guests took Deirdre’s criticisms so personally they’d engage in foul play 。 。 。

I really enjoy Carlene O'Connor's Irish Village Mystery Series。 This one was entertaining but a little too much of a stretch for me。 Still, it was fun。 I really enjoy Carlene O'Connor's Irish Village Mystery Series。 This one was entertaining but a little too much of a stretch for me。 Still, it was fun。 。。。more

I loved this book! Its wonderful characters are well-drawn and interesting, each with their own little quirks that make them so realistic。 The storyline is intriguing, with loads of twists and turns to keep your interest riveted from page one to the final word。 I can definitely recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery, especially fans of the series。

I am continuing to try to catch up with rating, reviewing, & logging my books read。。。 Of course I'd rather be reading than trying to put-a-dent-in-catch-up on 10 books right now (& probably over the next few days or week)。 But I also love to let folks know what I've read - especially if I've enjoyed it! And this mystery by Carlene O'Connor, MURDER IN AN IRISH BOOKSHOP falls into that category。 This is #7 in the "The Irish Village Mystery" series, and I have read every one of them。 And loved them I am continuing to try to catch up with rating, reviewing, & logging my books read。。。 Of course I'd rather be reading than trying to put-a-dent-in-catch-up on 10 books right now (& probably over the next few days or week)。 But I also love to let folks know what I've read - especially if I've enjoyed it! And this mystery by Carlene O'Connor, MURDER IN AN IRISH BOOKSHOP falls into that category。 This is #7 in the "The Irish Village Mystery" series, and I have read every one of them。 And loved them all。If the series started off as "a cozy mystery" set of stories - with Book #1, MURDER IN AN IRISH VILLAGE - it no longer meets the qualifications for that genre (which tend to be that a serious crime, usually a murder, be investigated and solved by a person not trained as a professional in law enforcement)。 A few volumes ago, Siobhan O'Sullivan, decided she would study to become an official Garda and has been assigned to duty in her own lovely village of Kilbane in County Cork, while continuing to own the family bistro that her offspring now mostly handle (with Siobhan continuing to bake her delicious brown bread!)。 And she's doing quite well in all her endeavors!Of course, the fact that this particular story is set in a bookshop immediately caught my attention (as I browsed the shelves in Barnes & Noble), so I did not wait for the paperback to come out to buy & read the book!。 I was not disappointed。 There's a new store in the village, and it's been eagerly awaited by all。 However, it turns out to require certain requirements for entry, especially during its "grand opening," which are a bit snobby。 Even Siobhan initially fails the test, but then she cannot be kept out - since her other qualifications, as a law enforcement officer and investigator, top any literary rules and regulations。 Finding, within the new store & just as the grand opening is about to occur, the dead body of one of the authors scheduled to read。。。 well, that was not exactly how she wanted to first experience the opening of the first book store in her hometown。 As with the previous novels in this series by Carlene O'Connor, MURDER IN AN IRISH BOOKSHOP kept me reading, not wanting to put it down until the criminal was discovered。。。 An excellent mystery, well written, wonderful characters (many that I've come to love as I read book-after-book), always a little bit of humor and family issues。 A mystery that holds my attention, yet gives just enough details re a murder investigation without adding in all the gore - which is what I require in my reading in that kind of book。 For me, it was a 5-star read。 Compelling。 I eagerly await the next book in this series! 。。。more

The setting of O'Connor's Murder books is charming, yet the plot of this book has too many repetitive themes。 Much of the book is filled with bland conversation and comments about the main character's obsession with curried chip, cappuccino and chocolate。A cozy mystery series that is finished for me。 The setting of O'Connor's Murder books is charming, yet the plot of this book has too many repetitive themes。 Much of the book is filled with bland conversation and comments about the main character's obsession with curried chip, cappuccino and chocolate。A cozy mystery series that is finished for me。 。。。more

Another grand read from Carlene O'Connor!I have now read everything I can of O'Connor and Deb Baker。 Each story takes me away on a new adventure, laced with entertaining quips and storylines。 My favorites are those that take place across the sea in Ireland。 Reading about places that are part of my heritage is a treat。 Another grand read from Carlene O'Connor!I have now read everything I can of O'Connor and Deb Baker。 Each story takes me away on a new adventure, laced with entertaining quips and storylines。 My favorites are those that take place across the sea in Ireland。 Reading about places that are part of my heritage is a treat。 。。。more

Wonderful! Felt like I was there!Started slow。 Hard to wrap my mind around such foreign sounding words and names。 As story went on, they all became friends。 Very enjoyable read。

A library pick。 Interesting enough plot but I had a hard time getting into the story and staying focused。 Lean towards 2。5 stars。

See my full review here。Best described as a cosy mystery, this latest entry in the Irish Village Mystery series features the town's Irish garda (their name for police) team trying to figure out who is killing people related to the newly opened bookshop。 I haven't read anything else in the series, but I'd say it stands up fairly well on its own。 The setting is completely Irish, making it a delightful bit of armchair travelling。 Rather unusually for a cosy mystery, it’s the police doing the work r See my full review here。Best described as a cosy mystery, this latest entry in the Irish Village Mystery series features the town's Irish garda (their name for police) team trying to figure out who is killing people related to the newly opened bookshop。 I haven't read anything else in the series, but I'd say it stands up fairly well on its own。 The setting is completely Irish, making it a delightful bit of armchair travelling。 Rather unusually for a cosy mystery, it’s the police doing the work rather a nosy villager。 Which is why Siobhan gets the bulk of the author’s attention, to the overall detriment of the story, I’d say。 None of the other characters feels particularly well developed。 The mystery was interesting, and it was not easy to solve as a reader, but the lightness of the story disappointed me。 It will appeal to those who are devoted to the cosy genre, I'd say。My thanks to Kensington Books for the digital reading copy provided in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Ahhh this was so good!!! O'Connor's mysteries just keep getting better and better。I love the Agatha Christie feel they have to them。 A great big cast of characters that you think are all capable of murder until the big reveal at the end。 As an aside。。。。I REALLY loved how much more public Macdara was with his feelings for Siobhan。 The two of them make my heart happy。 Ahhh this was so good!!! I am being kind in giving this book a 4 star, because the story is rather flimsy, but I enjoy spending time with Siobhan and the O'Sullivan 6 in their small Irish village of Kilbane in County Cork。Siobhan is excited, not only is it her 29th birthday, but there is a new bookshop opening in the village。 The opening will be attended by a few Indie writers (authors who independently publish their works)。 Before the bookshop even opens, an elderly woman dies on their doorstep。 Macdara tells Siobhan t I am being kind in giving this book a 4 star, because the story is rather flimsy, but I enjoy spending time with Siobhan and the O'Sullivan 6 in their small Irish village of Kilbane in County Cork。Siobhan is excited, not only is it her 29th birthday, but there is a new bookshop opening in the village。 The opening will be attended by a few Indie writers (authors who independently publish their works)。 Before the bookshop even opens, an elderly woman dies on their doorstep。 Macdara tells Siobhan to meet him at the store and she is surprised to find that her friends and family have gathered to celebrate her birthday。 Before she even has time to sample the cake, the lights go out and a scream is heard。 One of the indie authors has been murdered。 The owners of the bookshop are a very strange married couple of men。 Siobhan is not allowed in when the doors open because she does not know the password - lines from famous works which cannot be duplicated or used twice to get in。 Once inside, the customer is unlikely to find the books they seek, as the owner stock only history books and select others。 After the murder, the police are told of the existence of a secret room, hidden behind a bookcase。 A great deal of thought has been put into the tasteful decor, but oddly enough, they are displayed in bathtubs (they decided the toilets Oran ordered wouldn't work)。 There is new gardai in the village, a young woman of Nigerian descent, and Eion O'Sullivan is quite taken with her。Finally, Macdara is a happy man when Siobhan finally sets at date and they are told they can marry at the ruined abbey。 I was disappointed that the story of the the strange bookshop owners didn't go anywhere (other than the murders)。 How did they expect to stay in business when they did not sell what the people wanted? Why did they not warn people that they would need a passage to enter the store? They were turning away business。 A strange story line that went nowhere。 。。。more

Solid mystery with a small village vibe and a bookshop! This is the first book I have read in this series and I know it’s not the first book of the series。 I did really like that the story had the small village vibe and that the bookshop was part of the story as a character itself。 I loved all the suspects, however I really didn’t like the two main detectives and them being involved。 Something for me just didn’t work with them especially their teasing each other around other coworkers。 There were Solid mystery with a small village vibe and a bookshop! This is the first book I have read in this series and I know it’s not the first book of the series。 I did really like that the story had the small village vibe and that the bookshop was part of the story as a character itself。 I loved all the suspects, however I really didn’t like the two main detectives and them being involved。 Something for me just didn’t work with them especially their teasing each other around other coworkers。 There were also weird references to the new detective and her eating habits that was annoying and I am not sure why that was in the story( maybe this was brought up in previous books)。 All in all a good solid mystery with a likeable cast of suspects set in a small village that keep me turning the pages。 。。。more

This is a 3。5 star cozy romance。 I like this series a great deal, and this is a good one in the series。 You can certainly read this one without having read the whole series, and the mystery is a little harder to solve than usual。 The new bookstore in town is set to have a grand opening, with a contest for authors to be represented by the agent for the current hottest series author around。 It's quite a prize, and it looks as if may want it badly enough to kill for -- or maybe the new bookstore ow This is a 3。5 star cozy romance。 I like this series a great deal, and this is a good one in the series。 You can certainly read this one without having read the whole series, and the mystery is a little harder to solve than usual。 The new bookstore in town is set to have a grand opening, with a contest for authors to be represented by the agent for the current hottest series author around。 It's quite a prize, and it looks as if may want it badly enough to kill for -- or maybe the new bookstore owners brought the trouble with them but Siobhan O'Sullivan and her team are going to have to figure it out before another person is killed。An entertaining visit to the re imagined Irish village we'd all like to visit in real life。 。。。more

This is a wonderful series, and this is a really good instalment! I wasn't super excited about the narrator, and can't figure out why 。。。 of course love any Irish accent, and she does quite a variety of them 。。。 so not sure what it was that troubled me。 The story is wonderful 。。。 a really good mystery, perhaps a bit more involved than the traditional cozy, still a very cozy feeling。 The characters are wonderful, and I especially loved this one because of all of the bookish references。 This is a wonderful series, and this is a really good instalment!
